Gauff Stuns Swiatek to Reach WTA Finals Semifinals

Posted : 06 November 2024

Coco Gauff secured a rare win over Iga Swiatek to reach the semifinals of the WTA Finals in Riyadh, defeating the defending champion 6-3, 6-4. With the victory, Gauff ended Swiatek's hopes of claiming the year-end number one ranking, as Swiatek needed a win to stay in contention for the top spot over Aryna Sabalenka. Gauff, who had only won once against Swiatek in 12 previous meetings, turned the tables on the Pole, winning in straight sets to make it two impressive victories from her round-robin matches this week.

Gauff expressed confidence going into the match despite her poor head-to-head record against Swiatek, and it paid off as she broke Swiatek's serve multiple times. After a tight opening game, Gauff dominated, breaking Swiatek's serve in the seventh game of the first set, and sealed the set with another break in just 49 minutes. In the second set, Gauff weathered a long battle for her serve and sealed the win after forcing Swiatek into making 47 unforced errors, showcasing her resilience throughout the one-hour 48-minute match.

Earlier in the day, Barbora Krejcikova eliminated Jessica Pegula from semifinal contention with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Pegula, who was the runner-up at the WTA Finals last year, suffered her second consecutive straight-sets loss in Riyadh, and heads into her final round-robin match without winning a set. Krejcikova, who bounced back from a loss to Swiatek in her opening match, kept her hopes alive for a semifinal berth with a dominant performance that included 11 aces and four breaks of Pegula’s serve.

Krejcikova reflected on her win, emphasizing her determination to fight for every point, and expressed pride in making it to the WTA Finals despite being ranked 13th in the world. The Czech player secured her spot in Riyadh thanks to a new WTA rule prioritizing Grand Slam champions who rank between 9th and 20th over players ranked 8th. Krejcikova, the reigning Wimbledon champion, will await Thursday's results to determine if she will qualify for the semifinals.
