Coco Gauff, the American teenager, suffered an early exit from Wimbledon after a thrilling match against Sofia Kenin. Gauff, seeded seventh, was defeated 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 by Kenin, who had previously won the 2020 Australian Open but has faced setbacks in her career since then.
Kenin, a qualifier, expressed her pride in the victory, considering the challenges she has encountered, including injuries and changes in her coaching team.
Meanwhile, top seed Iga Swiatek made a strong statement with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 win over Zhu Lin in her first-round match.
Gauff's draw against a former Grand Slam champion like Kenin was perceived as a difficult matchup from the start, and the result indeed proved to be a potential shock.
Gauff had gained attention in 2019 when she made a remarkable run at Wimbledon as a 15-year-old, defeating Venus Williams on her way to the fourth round.
Although high expectations surrounded Gauff, she was unable to overcome the inspired play of Kenin, who targeted Gauff's weaker forehand and maintained an aggressive style of play.
Gauff acknowledged that she has areas to improve upon after the loss and remains determined to progress in her career.
For Kenin, the victory holds significant meaning, representing a comeback year for her. Despite facing challenges, she has displayed strong form and had a feeling that this would be a positive year for her.
Previously ranked fourth in the world, Kenin also reached the final of the Roland Garros tournament in 2020.
