Gauff extends 16-match winning streak, sets up thrilling China Open semifinal against Swiatek

Posted : 06 October 2023

Coco Gauff continued her remarkable winning streak, now at 16 matches, setting up a thrilling semi-final clash against Iga Swiatek at the China Open. The 19-year-old American, who claimed her first major title at the US Open just last month, displayed her prowess by defeating Greek sixth seed Maria Sakkari with a score of 6-2, 6-4 in Beijing.

Ranked third in the world, Gauff is poised to face off against Swiatek, the second-ranked player, after the Polish sensation fought back from the brink of defeat against Caroline Garcia. Garcia had been on the verge of victory, coming within two points of winning, but ultimately succumbed to Swiatek with a final score of 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

Meanwhile, the top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka is set to compete against Elena Rybakina for a place in the semi-finals, where she could potentially face Jelena Ostapenko or Liudmila Samsonova.

Coco Gauff's current winning streak is the longest on the WTA Tour in 2023, and she has not experienced defeat since a quarter-final loss at the Canadian Open to Jessica Pegula on August 11th. Since then, she has secured her first WTA 1,000 title in Cincinnati and her maiden Grand Slam at the US Open, triumphing in 21 out of 22 matches since her early exit at Wimbledon.

In her latest victory over Sakkari, Gauff impressively did not drop her serve once. Conversely, Swiatek faced a tough challenge, losing her world number one ranking to Aryna Sabalenka after Sabalenka's remarkable run to the US Open final.

Swiatek showed tremendous composure as Garcia mounted a comeback from a four-point deficit to level the second-set tie-break at 5-5. However, Swiatek's resilience prevailed as she won the next two points, forcing a decider that turned out to be a one-sided affair in her favor, sealing her spot in the semi-finals.
