Coco Gauff claimed victory over Karolina Muchova in straight sets during the China Open on Sunday, marking her second title of the year and eighth overall. The 20-year-old American, who won the US Open last year, finished the match with a commanding score of 6-1, 6-3 in just 76 minutes in Beijing.
After a series of disappointing results, including a fourth-round exit at her home Grand Slam, Gauff added the China Open title to her earlier triumph in Auckland this January. This victory is particularly significant as she recently changed her coaching team, having parted ways with Brad Gilbert last month.
Gauff, currently ranked sixth in the world, expressed her emotions after the match, shedding tears of joy at her achievement. For Muchova, ranked 49th, it was a challenging match; she was the lowest-ranked finalist in the history of the prestigious WTA 1000 event.
The American got off to a blistering start, breaking Muchova's serve to take an early 2-0 lead in the first set. Gauff then held her serve effortlessly, racing to a 3-0 advantage within the first ten minutes of play. Muchova managed to get on the scoreboard with an ace, but Gauff remained dominant, displaying her powerful serve, which had been a concern in recent matches.
In the sixth game, Gauff had three break points and converted the first, extending her lead to 5-1 against a visibly shaken Muchova. She delivered her third ace of the match, setting up two set points. Although she faced a brief moment of uncertainty in her serve, Gauff clinched the first set in just 29 minutes on her third attempt.
Muchova, aiming for only her second career title, had already made a significant impact in the tournament by defeating top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals and Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in the semifinals. However, the 28-year-old struggled to find her rhythm early in the second set.
At the beginning of the second set, Muchova broke Gauff to take a 2-0 lead, but the American quickly responded by breaking back. Gauff then maintained her composure, comfortably closing out the match to secure the title, showcasing her talent and resilience on the court.
