French Open 2023: Third-round victor Casper Ruud defeats Jannik Sinner in a five-set marathon
Posted : 02 June 2023
Fourth seed Casper Ruud defeated Italian Giulio Zeppieri in four sets to go to the third round of the French Open.
The 24-year-old Norwegian was in charge early on and fought to win 6-3 6-2 4-6 7-5 after being pushed into a fourth set.
After losing in the championship matches at the US Open and Roland Garros last year, Ruud is aiming for his first Grand Slam victory.
However, eighth seed Jannik Sinner is eliminated after falling to Daniel Altmaier of Germany in a marathon five-set match.
Ruud struggled to find his flow in the third set after breaking early in the previous two, and an enraged Zeppieri won it with his first break of the match.
Ruud gained the break in the fourth and won the match in three hours and four minutes when serving for it a second time.
The next round's opponent for him will be Chinese Zhang Zhizhen.
"I was so nervous before today," said Zverev. "I really appreciate playing on this court, even with what happened last year, I still love to play on this court and I'm unbelievably happy to win on this court.
"I am happy I'm finding my form, finding my rhythm. This is the tournament you want to play, you want to win."
