French Open 2023: Tennis player abuse worsens says Sloane Stephens
Posted : 30 May 2023
Sloane Stephens, a former US Open winner, claims that tennis players are being mistreated more frequently and that efforts to stop it are ineffective.
The organisers of the French Open this year provided players with artificial intelligence protection against trolls on social media.
On platforms such as facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter, the technology seeks to weed out abuse.
"It's been a problem my entire career," American Stephens said after her first-round win at Roland Garros.
"It has never stopped. If anything, it's only gotten worse.
"I did hear about the software. I have not used it. I have a lot of key words banned on Instagram and all of these things, but that doesn't stop someone from just typing in an asterisk or typing it in a different way, which obviously software most of the time doesn't catch."
Since the players' mental health is a "priority for Roland Garros," according to Caroline Flaissier, CEO of the French Tennis Federation, the French Open is the first of the four Grand Slams to implement such a programme.
