Stefanos Tsitsipas, the fifth seed, defeated Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain in straight sets to go to the third round of the French Open.
On Court Suzanne Lenglen, the Greek, the 2021 runner-up at Roland Garros, triumphed 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-2.
The next opponent for Tsitsipas, 24, will either be the unseeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman or the unseeded Portuguese Nuno Borges.
"It's a spiritual type of surface," said Tsitsipas about playing on clay in Paris.
"I'm attached to it because I played on that surface since I started playing tennis."
He defeated Carballes Baena by breaking him twice in the first set, and although breaking him twice more in the second set, Carballes Baena fought back each time as four straight games were played against his serve.
Tsitsipas won the tie-break, promptly increased his lead to 4-0 in the third, and served out the match in two hours and sixteen minutes.
Tsitsipas lost in the finals of the Australian Open and French Open, hence he has never won a Grand Slam.
