French Open 2023 results: Madison Keys advances as Sloane Stephens defeats Karolina Pliskova
Posted : 29 May 2023
By eliminating Karolina Pliskova, former US Open champion Sloane Stephens demonstrated why she is one of the French Open's most dangerous unseeded competitors.
American Stephens defeated the 16th-seeded and two-time Grand Slam finalist from the Czech Republic 6-0, 6-4 in what had been an exciting first-round match.
Stephens, who finished second in Paris in 2018, was not seeded when the draw was revealed last week, although her current ranking of 30th would have been sufficient.
Madison Keys, a countryman, also made progress.
Keys defeated Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 6-1 3-6 6-1; Stephens defeated her in the 2017 US Open final; and 2021 runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia defeated Czech youngster Linda Fruhvirtova 6-2 6-2.
The fifth seed from France, Carolina Garcia, will play China's Wang Xiyu later on Monday. Petra Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon winner, and Elina Svitolina will also be competing.
