French Open 2023: Novak Djokovic sends a message to Kosovo after winning the Open
Posted : 30 May 2023
Following his triumph at the French Open, when he started his quest for a record-breaking 23rd men's Grand Slam singles championship, Novak Djokovic scrawled a political statement regarding Kosovo on a camera lens.
Serbian player Djokovic defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic with scores of 6-3, 6-2, and 7-6 (7-1).
Djokovic wrote these words after defeating the American: "Serbia's heart is in Kosovo. Stop the bloodshed."
The declaration made reference to current unrest in Kosovo, which separated from Serbia in 2008.
Since ethnic Albanian mayors were installed in the country's north, there has been bloodshed, with police and NATO forces squaring off against Serb protestors. Serbia has never recognised Kosovo's independence.
Speaking to Serbian journalists, Djokovic, said: "I am not a politician, nor do I intend to enter into debates.
"As a Serb, it hurts me what is happening in Kosovo. Our people have been expelled from the municipalities. This is the least I could do. As a public figure, I feel an obligation to show support for our people and all of Serbia.
"I hear there was a lot of criticism on social media. I don't know if someone will punish me or something like that, but I would do it again. I am against wars and conflicts of any kind.
"Kosovo is our heart, stronghold, the centre of the most important events, the biggest battle took place there, the most monasteries. There are many reasons why I wrote this."
There are no explicit guidelines on what players may and cannot say at Grand Slams, according to the French Tennis Federation, which organised the Roland Garros competition.
At the Australian Open in January, Djokovic became embroiled in a political controversy after discovering that his father, Srdjan, had been caught on camera taking selfies with Vladimir Putin fans.
