In order to defeat Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru and advance to the men's quarterfinals of the French Open for the record-tying 17th time, Novak Djokovic displayed his superior talent.
The 36-year-old Serbian third seed defeated Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 on the clay at Roland Garros to take exclusive possession of the last-eight record.
In addition, Djokovic wants to surpass Nadal by capturing a record-tying 23rd Grand Slam men's singles championship.
Next, the two-time champion will take against Karen Khachanov of Russia, the 11th seed.
Khachanov, 27, defeated unseeded Italian Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets, winning 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), and 6-1 to advance to his third straight Grand Slam quarterfinal.
Later on Sunday, the top seed from Spain, Carlos Alcaraz, will play the 17th seed from Italy, Lorenzo Musetti, who is Djokovic's major competition for the championship without injured 14-time winner Rafael Nadal.
