French Open 2023 final: Novak Djokovic has the chance to equal Margaret Court's Wimbledon record.
Posted : 12 June 2023
Novak Djokovic, after winning his 23rd Grand Slam title and surpassing Rafael Nadal, does not believe it is his place to determine if he is the greatest player of all time.
Following his victory at the French Open, Djokovic now holds the men's record for the most Grand Slam titles, one ahead of Nadal. He is tied with Serena Williams at 23 titles and has the opportunity to equal Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 at Wimbledon in July.
However, Djokovic, aged 36, prefers not to engage in discussions about his status as the greatest player. He views himself as someone who is writing his own history and leaves such deliberations to others.
Over the past few years, Djokovic has engaged in a compelling rivalry with Nadal and Roger Federer, who retired last year with 20 major titles. By surpassing his long-time rivals with his victory over Casper Ruud at Roland Garros, Djokovic has established a lead for the first time.
Considering Djokovic's current form and the injuries affecting Nadal, who plans to retire in 2024, as well as the retirement of 41-year-old Federer, it appears likely that Djokovic will further extend his lead.
While acknowledging the significance of being ahead of his competitors in terms of Grand Slam titles, Djokovic recognizes that each great champion leaves behind their own mark and legacy.
He possesses immense faith, confidence, and belief in his abilities and continues to produce exceptional tennis. Winning the trophy at the French Open serves as further confirmation of the quality of tennis he can still deliver.
