French Open 2023: Elise Mertens defeats Jessica Pegula in straight sets
Posted : 02 June 2023
The 2023 French Open saw Jessica Pegula depart as the highest-ranked female player ever after Elise Mertens soundly defeated her.
Pegula, an American third seed and 2016 Paris quarterfinalist, battled in a 6-1 6-3 loss.
The following matchup pits Russian Anastasia Potapova or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova against 28th-seeded Belgian Mertens.
Having advanced to the second round of the women's doubles tournament alongside Coco Gauff, Pegula's time at Roland Garros is not yet finished.
The pair advanced to the Australian Open semifinals earlier this year and the championship in 2022.
Pegula is the 21st seed to lose in the women's singles after six days of play after her French Open preparations were delayed by food sickness.
