French Open 2023: Egypt’s Mayar Sherif on tennis ‘obsession’
Posted : 27 May 2023
It is "impossible to be a good tennis player from Egypt," according to Mayar Sherif, who claims that people told her this to her face.
The world number 55, who just advanced to the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open, has also said that her inherited family trait of tennis "obsession" fuels her desire to disprove her detractors.
"I use that negative energy, it gives me a motivation," she said.
"I'm going to prove you wrong, I'm going to show you that I can."
The Cairo-born 27-year-old made history in 2020 when she became the first Egyptian woman to play in the first round of a Grand Slam. In her opening encounter at the French Open, she won the first set before falling to Czech number two seed Karolina Pliskova.
Mohamed Salah, a striker for Liverpool and Egypt, saw her performance and gave her compliments on Twitter.
Three years later, Sherif is getting ready to face American Madison Brengle in another first-round encounter at Roland Garros.
