French Open 2023: Coco Gauff gets through second round

The sixth-seeded American Coco Gauff and the seventh-seeded Tunisian Ons Jabeur overcame recent slumps to get to the second round of the French Open.
 
Gauff, who advanced to the Roland Garros final the previous year, overcame Rebeka Masarova of Spain by scores of 3-6, 6-1, and 6-2.
 
Gauff's development versus Masarova, who was rated 71st, was not as simple.
 
The 19-year-old Gauff struggled in the opening set because she lacked confidence in her skills and couldn't convert any of her eight break points. This was the first time this season that she hadn't won back-to-back matches on the European clay.
 
Gauff had not rallied to win after falling behind in a set in her previous 15 matches, but she shown mental toughness to escape a shock and set up a second-round encounter with world No. 61 Julia Grabher of Austria.
