Fran Jones suffered a distressing moment during her first-round match at the Colsanitas Cup in Colombia, collapsing on the court while attempting to serve in the ninth game of the deciding set.
The 24-year-old British player was unable to continue and had to be taken off in a wheelchair, handing victory to Argentina’s Julia Riera, who was leading 6-2, 5-7, 5-3 at the time. Tournament organizers extended their well wishes, hoping for Jones’ swift recovery.
Elsewhere, Heather Watson's campaign at the Charleston Open ended in the opening round following a straight-sets loss to Belarusian Iryna Shymanovich.
The British number seven fought hard but ultimately fell 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 to the world number 215. Watson’s early exit marks another setback in what has been a challenging season for the former British number one.
Both British players will now look to recover and regroup as the WTA season continues. Jones’ condition remains a concern, while Watson will aim to regain form and confidence in upcoming tournaments.
