Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime secured a spot in the French Open last 16, setting up a clash with Carlos Alcaraz after a dominant victory over Ben Shelton from the United States on Saturday. The 21st-seeded Auger-Aliassime triumphed with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 win against his 15th-ranked opponent in a match carried over from Friday. This marks Auger-Aliassime's second consecutive advance to the fourth round in Paris, having reached the same stage in 2022 before losing to Rafael Nadal in a five-set battle.
The 23-year-old Auger-Aliassime, who has a 3-2 career lead over world No. 3 Alcaraz, will face the Spanish prodigy for the first time on clay. Meanwhile, fifth seed Daniil Medvedev also progressed to the last 16 at the French Open for the third time in his career. Medvedev overcame Tomas Machac in four sets, winning 7-6 (7/4), 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 against the world number 34 from the Czech Republic.
Medvedev will next face either Alex de Minaur or Jan-Lennard Struff for a place in the quarterfinals. Reflecting on his match, Medvedev acknowledged the difficulty of the contest, stating, "It was a very hard match. I'm happy I stayed consistent despite some tough moments in the third set."
