Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion hailing from Britain, has regretfully withdrawn from the Miami Open due to a lower back injury, according to tournament officials. This setback marks another challenge for the 21-year-old athlete, who had previously faced an eight-month hiatus from the sport last year due to wrist and ankle issues.
Despite her recent return to competition in January and a commendable performance at Indian Wells, reaching the third round, Raducanu expressed concern over exacerbating her condition and opted to prioritize her long-term health.
Addressing her decision, Raducanu cited persistent lower back pain and emphasized her cautious approach towards resuming competitive play. She conveyed disappointment over withdrawing from the Miami Open, acknowledging the significance of the tournament while wishing the event success. As a wildcard entry, Raducanu was slated to face China's Wang Xiyu in the first round, but her injury forced a change in the match lineup.
Last year, Raducanu underwent surgeries on her ankle and both wrists, reflecting the physical toll endured by athletes in professional tennis. Despite her recent setback, the tournament continues with rearranged matchups, including Wang Xiyu competing against Slovakian qualifier Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
Meanwhile, the event witnesses the return of Romanian player Simona Halep, whose four-year doping ban was reduced, allowing her to resume competition. Halep, granted a wildcard entry, is set to challenge Spain's Paula Badosa, while veteran Venus Williams faces off against Russian Diana Shnaider in the opening round.
