Emma Raducanu Withdraws from China Open Due to Foot Injury

Posted : 24 September 2024

Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from this week's China Open in Beijing due to a foot injury. The 21-year-old British tennis player suffered the injury during her quarter-final match at the Korea Open in Seoul on Saturday, where she had to retire after the first set against Daria Kasatkina. Raducanu’s name was initially included in the Beijing draw when it was released on Monday, but she announced her withdrawal shortly thereafter, explaining on X that she had sprained ligaments in her foot and required more time to heal.

The world number 54 was set to face a qualifier in the opening round of the tournament, with the possibility of meeting fifth-seeded Zheng Qinwen in the following round. In her recent match in Seoul, Raducanu called for a medical timeout after five games and ultimately decided to stop playing after losing the first set. The British number two, who gained fame for her remarkable US Open victory as a teenage qualifier in 2021, is next scheduled to compete in Wuhan, China, on October 7.

This setback comes as Raducanu is on the cusp of breaking into the top 50 of the WTA rankings. After a win against Yue Yuan in the last 16 at the Korea Open, she noted that she had been dealing with minor injuries over the past few months but felt she had gained more confidence in her physical condition. Raducanu expressed that she had been working hard, especially earlier in the year, to improve her fitness and performance on the court.

Raducanu's current ranking of 54 is her highest since August 2022, when she lost points from her US Open triumph. This season, she has played 33 matches on the WTA Tour, just three fewer than her total for the entire 2022 season. The Korea Open marked her return to competitive play after losing in the first round of the US Open on August 28, and she reflected on her limited schedule leading up to the tournament, describing it as a "lesson to learn."
