Emma Raducanu, the former US Open champion, expressed pride in her performance after securing her first victory in 48 days at the Korea Open in Seoul. She defeated American Peyton Stearns with a score of 7-6(4), 7-6(5) in the first round. The 21-year-old Raducanu, who had exited the US Open in the first round last month, faced a challenging match. Despite initially leading 4-1 in the first set, she lost four consecutive games but managed to win the set in a tiebreak.
In the second set, Stearns rallied from a 5-3 deficit to serve for the set, but Raducanu broke back and clinched another tiebreak to win the match. Raducanu noted the challenging conditions, including the high humidity and unpredictable ball bounce, which added to the difficulty of the encounter. She acknowledged the challenge posed by Stearns, highlighting her opponent's good form and the significance of the win for her own confidence.
Raducanu will face Chinese eighth seed Yuan Yue in the second round of the tournament.
