Emma Raducanu defeats McCartney Kessler to reach Miami Open last 16

Posted : 24 March 2025

Emma Raducanu’s journey at the Miami Open has been marked by a shift in mindset rather than coaching stability. Ahead of the tournament, much attention was given to her decision to part ways with Vladimir Platenik after a short-term partnership. However, the former British No. 1 has shown resilience, embracing a more relaxed approach that seems to be paying off. Her latest victory against McCartney Kessler secured her place in the last 16, proving that a fresh perspective on her game is yielding positive results.

Raducanu dominated the opening set, overcoming an early setback to win 6-1. She had initially dropped her first service game but quickly found her rhythm to take control of the match. Her strong start continued into the second set, where she raced to a 3-0 lead before Kessler was forced to retire due to injury. While the match ended prematurely, Raducanu’s commanding performance showcased her growing confidence and form.

Despite recent turbulence in her coaching setup, Raducanu has maintained focus and composure. Her departure from Platenik could have been a distraction, but instead, she has strung together impressive victories over Sayaka Ishii, Emma Navarro, and now Kessler. These wins have propelled her to her best tournament result of the year so far, highlighting her ability to thrive amid change.

Speaking after the match, Raducanu credited her success to a refreshed approach with her team. She emphasized the importance of staying relaxed, revealing that she was playing spike ball with her team just minutes before stepping on the court. This shift in mentality, she believes, has allowed her to express herself more freely during matches.

“When I’m playing my best tennis, I’m really expressing my personality,” Raducanu shared. Her newfound perspective appears to be working, helping her navigate challenges with a sense of enjoyment rather than pressure.

Her next test in Miami comes against Amanda Anisimova, another home favorite. Having already defeated two American players, Navarro and Kessler, Raducanu is confident that her current mindset will help her take on the challenge. She remains focused on maintaining her composure and playing with freedom.

“I’d say I’m a bit of a free spirit, so I don’t need restrictions or being told what to do,” she explained. “When I’m being really authentic, that’s when I’m playing my best.” With this philosophy guiding her, Raducanu looks poised to continue her strong run in Miami.
