Elena Rybakina withdraws from Eastbourne International due to fitness concerns

Posted : 26 June 2023
Elena Rybakina, the reigning Wimbledon champion, has withdrawn from the Eastbourne International, raising concerns about her fitness for this year's Wimbledon tournament.

The 24-year-old player, who represents Kazakhstan, claimed her first Grand Slam title last year and reached the final of the Australian Open earlier this year. Rybakina cited her recovery from a virus that led to her withdrawal from the French Open in June as the reason for her decision.

In a statement, Rybakina explained that she and her team concluded that it would be best for her to focus on recuperation and prepare for Wimbledon.

She revealed that she is still in the process of recovering from the virus she contracted in Paris, and the post-Roland Garros period has been particularly challenging for her. Additionally, she encountered another minor issue during her time in Berlin.

Rybakina acknowledged that she was not in optimal physical condition, as evidenced by her loss to Donna Vekic in the last 16 at the German tournament.

As the tournament's top seed, her withdrawal has resulted in Croatian lucky loser Petra Martic taking her place and facing British number one Katie Boulter in the opening round.

Among the participants in the women's singles, there are three British players: Jodie Burrage and Harriet Dart, who will respectively play against American Lauren Davis and China's Zhang Shuai.

With Rybakina's absence from the Eastbourne International, there are concerns about her readiness for the upcoming Wimbledon, where she will defend her title.
