Africa's hope of making it to the podium at the ongoing WTT Contender Lagos now rests on the shoulders of Egypt’s duo of Dina Meshref and Hana Goda.
With the exit of Nigerian players as well as Cameroon's Sarah Hanffou and Algeria’s Mehdi Boloussa in the first round of the singles event, Meshref and Goda showed class against their Indian counterparts as they took down Diya Chitale and Sreeja Akula to berth in the second round of the women’s singles.
Despite claiming a 3-1 win over Chitale, Meshref admitted that the match was tough for her.
"I am very happy and I thank God for my win today. It was a difficult match; definitely, it was not an easy one.
"She's a good player. I'm very happy I managed to win in the end," she said.
Like her compatriot, 15-year-old Goda admitted the difficulty she faced.
"I am very satisfied with my game today as I was a little bit nervous, not very nervous but I was playing really fast and I wanted to slow down a little bit.
"It was a 3-0 match. And although it may look easy from outside, it was quite challenging because I have played against her a lot of times and she is a very strong opponent for me.
"So, I am very happy that I can win this match and I am excited for the next matches," the African champion said.
They both, however, acknowledged the huge role Lagos fans played in their victory.
"Lagos is a very unique, different city; always special to be here. What I love most about Lagos is the crowd supporting us. It is so good to be back in Lagos," said Meshref.
Goda added: "I love Lagos because I also won my first African title here, last year.
"So, it’s a really special place for me. Hopefully, I can go on and do better. I really like it here.
"It’s quite hot here but I am used to it. It’s okay. I am very happy and very satisfied."
