Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell celebrated Australia’s first win in the 2024 Group Stage with a jubilant chest bump after a grueling two-hour and fifteen-minute match. Despite the intense battle, Ebden downplayed any drama, noting that the Australian duo ultimately secured a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 victory. They nearly finished the match in straight sets, but France's Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Pierre-Hugues Herbert rallied back to force a third set after breaking the Australians' serve.
The day began positively for Australia when Thanasi Kokkinakis delivered a clutch performance in the opening singles match. Kokkinakis, who is ranked over 50 spots below his opponent Arthur Fils, stepped in for the injured Alex de Minaur and won in straight sets with scores of 7-6(4) and 7-6(3). Kokkinakis acknowledged that his mindset shifted significantly when he realized he might be called upon, which drove him to train with greater focus and purpose.
Despite Kokkinakis' strong performance, French top-ranked player Ugo Humbert defeated Alexei Popyrin decisively with a 6-2, 6-3 victory, leveling the tie. This left the outcome to be decided in the doubles match, where Ebden and Purcell rose to the occasion. Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt praised the team’s resilience, acknowledging the challenging nature of the matches and expressing pride in Kokkinakis' performance as well as the crucial doubles victory.
French captain Paul-Henri Mathieu also recognized the close nature of the contest, attributing the outcome to just a few key points. He noted that while France was eager to win, the result reflected the unpredictable nature of Davis Cup ties. Mathieu expressed hope for future success against Australia, possibly in a final if the teams meet again, emphasizing the competitive spirit of the sport.
