Not only Frances Tiafoe but also NBA superstar Kevin Durant graced the Stadium at the Mubadala Citi DC Open on Tuesday night. Durant watched Tiafoe secure a thrilling 7-6(5), 7-6(5) victory over Aslan Karatsev.
After the match, Durant and Tiafoe shared a warm embrace on the court, and Durant joined Tiafoe and emcee Rennae Stubbs for an on-court interview. When asked about his tennis skills, Durant jokingly admitted, "Mine is nonexistent, but there was a lot of energy in the building tonight. It was exciting, I’m glad he got the win."
Durant also highlighted the impact Tiafoe is making on the local community, mentioning how the American tennis player is representing the area well.
Tiafoe's journey from training at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, Maryland, to reaching the US Open semi-finals and breaking into the Top 10 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings has earned him the admiration of his fans, who showed their appreciation throughout the match.
"Think about it. I was a kid who had an opportunity and dreamed massively big. Shouldn't be doing any of these things, honestly. [I was] sneaking into this event, telling my parents I was going to be a pro at a super young age, against all odds, wearing hand-me-down clothes, holes in my shoes, cargo shorts," Tiafoe reflected. "Now I'm playing this tournament. People are here to see me. I'm packing it out. Doubles was nuts yesterday. Packed it out today. Guys like KD and [Kentavious] Caldwell-Pope and Gaff [Daniel Gafford] want to come see me play."
Tiafoe expressed his gratitude for the support he has received and emphasized the humility he maintains despite his success. He cherishes these impactful moments and aims to keep them going, appreciating the opportunity to inspire others with his journey.
