Donna Vekic overcame a challenging service game on Tuesday to secure a spot in the Wimbledon semifinals, ending the remarkable run of New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun. The Croatian, ranked 37th in the world, fought back from a set down on Court No. 1, winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, marking her first time reaching the last four at a Grand Slam.
Sun, ranked 123rd, initially took the lead by breaking Vekic in the 11th game and serving out the first set. Vekic struggled with her serve in the second set, producing five double faults while serving for the set at 5-3. However, she quickly regrouped, breaking Sun's serve to take the set 6-4.
The momentum fully shifted in Vekic's favor in the final set, as she won 16 consecutive points, racing to a 5-0 lead and ultimately wrapping up the match in just over two hours. Vekic will face either Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini or US 19th seed Emma Navarro in the semifinals. Sun's impressive run ended as she aimed to become the second New Zealand woman to reach a Grand Slam semifinal, following Belinda Cordwell's 1989 Australian Open achievement.
