Dominic Thiem Bows Out in Emotional Farewell Match at Erste Bank Open 2024

For nearly an hour, fans at the sold-out Wiener Stadthalle held on to hope for a victory from Dominic Thiem in his farewell tournament, but ultimately, Italian player Luciano Darderi proved too formidable.

 

After 1 hour and 32 minutes of play, Darderi emerged victorious with a score of 7-6 (6), 6-2, marking the end of Thiem's remarkable career. The match concluded at 7:41 p.m. on October 22, 2024, leading to an emotional farewell filled with standing ovations and heartfelt gratitude from Thiem to his supporters.

 

In his post-match remarks, Thiem expressed his appreciation for the fans who had supported him throughout his career, both in the arena and from their homes. He aimed to give the crowd one last memorable performance and hoped to showcase some of his best shots.

 

 His efforts were particularly evident in the first set, where he had a break lead and even led 5-2 before losing in the tie-break. Thiem's signature backhand down the line was especially effective, causing significant challenges for Darderi, ranked 42nd in the world.

 

Despite his strong showing in the first set, Thiem acknowledged that he was not able to maintain that level of play consistently over the years. He reflected on the challenges he had faced in recent tournaments in Vienna, admitting that while his performance had improved, it still fell short of his previous standards. However, he was pleased with his ability to compete during the first set, stating that he felt "fully in the zone."

 

As the match concluded, the atmosphere shifted from hope to admiration. Thiem received prolonged standing ovations from the crowd, who showed their appreciation with a choreographed display of support that read "Thank you Domi."

 

In a symbolic gesture marking the end of his professional journey, Thiem placed the racket he used in his final matches into a display case, where it will be featured in "The Official Tennis Experience" exhibition at Studio F in the Wiener Stadthalle. Following Thiem's match, Britain's Jack Draper and Italy's Lorenzo Musetti advanced to the next round, each securing victories against their opponents.
