Djokovic withdraws from Madrid Open, eyes return in Rome

Posted : 23 April 2024

Novak Djokovic, the world's top-ranked tennis player and holder of 24 Grand Slam titles, has announced his withdrawal from the Madrid Open this week, but remains hopeful about competing in Rome.

Speculations arose as the Serbian star was notably absent from the tournament's draw on Monday, confirming reports of his absence from the Spanish capital event. This decision aligns with Djokovic's strategy of managing his schedule carefully, having participated in only four tournaments this year as he seeks to maintain his peak form.

Speaking after receiving the World Sportsman of the Year award at the Laureus Awards in Madrid, Djokovic expressed his intentions to target the Italian Open before defending his French Open title later in May.

Despite his withdrawal from Madrid, Djokovic remains optimistic about finding his best tennis level at Roland Garros, emphasizing his ongoing pursuit of excellence throughout the season. This marks the third time in four years that Djokovic has opted out of the Madrid Open, prioritizing his physical readiness for the upcoming major tournaments.

Djokovic's decision to skip the Madrid Open follows his withdrawal from the Miami Open in March, underlining his strategic approach to peak performance in the major events, including Wimbledon, the Olympics, and the US Open.

Meanwhile, fellow veteran Rafael Nadal continues his comeback from injury, gearing up for his Madrid campaign after a stint at the Barcelona Open. Nadal faces 16-year-old American Darwin Blanch in the first round, aiming to build momentum after his early exit in Barcelona.

In Djokovic's absence, the spotlight shifts to other contenders at the Madrid Open, including reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz and top seed Jannik Sinner. Alcaraz, nursing a forearm problem, eyes a strong return to form as he prepares to face either Alexander Shevchenko or Arthur Rinderknech in the second round.

Meanwhile, Sinner, currently second in the world rankings, assumes the top seed position in Djokovic's absence, eagerly anticipating his campaign against either Italian compatriot Lorenzo Sonego or a qualifier in the second round.
