Novak Djokovic suffered a rare defeat as Serbia fell to Australia in the United Cup quarter-finals. The world number one received treatment for a right wrist issue during his 6-4 6-4 loss to Alex de Minaur in Perth.
This marks Djokovic's first loss in Australia since 2018 and precedes the defense of his Australian Open title beginning on January 14. Australia secured their victory as Ajla Tomljanovic defeated Natalija Stevanovic in the second match of the tie.
Despite Djokovic's wrist troubles, De Minaur managed to break his serve late in the first set and again for a 4-3 lead in the second set. Although Djokovic saved three match points, he couldn't level the match. Australia will now face either Germany or Greece in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, top seeds Poland advanced to the semi-finals with a comfortable win over China, and Greece secured their spot by defeating Canada.
In other matches, France, led by Caroline Garcia and Adrian Mannarino, secured a spot in the quarter-finals by beating Italy. They are set to face Norway, with the winner meeting Poland in the next round of the United Cup.
