Djokovic, Kyrgios Shine on Doubles Debut, Osaka Returns to Victory

Posted : 31 December 2024

Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios delighted the crowd on their doubles debut at the Brisbane International on Monday, securing a thrilling 6-4 6-7(4) (10-8) victory over Alexander Erler and Andreas Mies. The duo, who have developed a close friendship in recent years, displayed great chemistry, and their connection was evident as the packed Pat Rafter Arena cheered them on. Kyrgios, returning from over 18 months on the sidelines due to injuries, showcased his powerful serve, while Djokovic's timely volleys and finesse helped them clinch the first set with a break.

The duo's playful energy was on full display as Kyrgios wowed the crowd with a cheeky between-the-legs shot in the second set, though Erler and Mies fought back to force a match tiebreak. The crowd grew louder as Djokovic delivered two powerful serves, setting the stage for Kyrgios to seal the win with an ace, wrapping up their exciting first match together. The atmosphere was electric throughout, with the pair feeding off the crowd’s enthusiasm as they celebrated their victory.

In other singles action, Australia’s Jordan Thompson made an impressive comeback, overcoming Matteo Berrettini 3-6 6-3 6-4. Defending champion Grigor Dimitrov also advanced, defeating Yannick Hanfmann 7-6(5) 6-3, while third seed Holger Rune suffered a setback, losing 7-5 6-3 to Jiri Lehecka in a blow to his Australian Open preparations. Rune's defeat casts doubt on his momentum ahead of the year's first Grand Slam, set to begin on January 12.

Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka returned to form with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Lina Glushko in Auckland, marking her comeback after battling a back issue in recent months. Despite struggles with consistency since returning from maternity leave, Osaka showed her strength, especially in the face of protests outside the stadium. Looking ahead, Osaka, currently ranked 57th, revealed that the 2025 season will be pivotal in determining her future on tour, stating that if her ranking does not improve, she would rather focus on spending time with her daughter.
