Djokovic Crashes Out of Indian Wells

Posted : 10 March 2025

Novak Djokovic suffered a shock early exit at the Indian Wells ATP Masters, falling to lucky loser Botic van de Zandschulp in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 defeat. The 24-time Grand Slam champion struggled with unforced errors and failed to maintain momentum after a second-set revival, allowing his Dutch opponent to take control in the final set.

Meanwhile, Matteo Arnaldi caused another upset by defeating seventh seed Andrey Rublev, as several top seeds, including Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud, were eliminated in the second round.

Carlos Alcaraz, the two-time defending champion, eased past Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-2 to continue his title defense. The Spanish star, now the highest remaining seed, showed early nerves but quickly settled into his rhythm, dominating the second set.

On the women's side, Aryna Sabalenka kicked off her campaign with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 win over McCartney Kessler, while Madison Keys, fresh off her Australian Open triumph, cruised past Anastasia Potapova 6-3, 6-0 in her first match since Melbourne.

American hopes remained alive as Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff both advanced in their respective draws. Fritz, the 2022 Indian Wells champion, secured a solid 7-5, 6-3 win over Italian qualifier Matteo Gigante.

Gauff faced a tough challenge, battling through 21 double faults to edge past Moyuka Uchijima in a tense 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7/4) victory. With Djokovic and several top contenders out, the tournament remains wide open for new challengers to make their mark.
