World number one Novak Djokovic expressed confidence in Rafael Nadal's competitiveness at the upcoming Australian Open, despite the Spaniard's injury absence. Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam winner, is set to make his comeback in Brisbane this weekend ahead of the tournament in Melbourne.
Djokovic, who overtook Nadal's Grand Slam count in 2023, believes Nadal's training and preparation are geared towards winning titles, emphasizing the Spaniard's determination to be the best.
"I always expect him [Nadal] to play at his best," said Djokovic, reflecting on their resilience in the face of skepticism. He emphasized Nadal's commitment to returning to the tour with the intention of winning Grand Slam titles, citing the Spaniard's legendary status in the sport.
Djokovic, with 24 Grand Slam victories, acknowledged that Nadal's comeback is not merely to play at a moderate level but to compete for championships.
Nadal, who has announced that 2024 might be his final season, faced setbacks, including hip surgery and a decline in world rankings. Despite these challenges, Djokovic and fellow player Carlos Alcaraz believe Nadal is ready for action.
Alcaraz, after participating in an exhibition match against Djokovic, remarked that Nadal, based on practice sessions and feedback from other players, is expected to return to his top-level performance and achieve great things in the upcoming year.
The Australian Open, commencing on January 14 in Melbourne, will provide a platform for Nadal to showcase his readiness and determination to compete at the highest level once again.
