Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round of the US Open on Wednesday after Laslo Djere retired during their match. Djokovic was leading 6-4, 6-4, 2-0 when Djere withdrew, citing physical discomfort. Despite the premature end, Djokovic noted that it was a challenging match, especially as Djere had a significant lead in the second set before Djokovic managed a comeback.
In his post-match comments, Djokovic acknowledged the tough conditions and his own struggles, particularly with his serve. He expressed that Djere’s retirement was unfortunate, given the competitive nature of their encounter. Djokovic will now face Australian Alexei Popyrin in the next round, continuing his quest for a fifth US Open title.
Meanwhile, defending women’s champion Coco Gauff secured her place in the next round with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Tatjana Maria. Although Gauff struggled with her serve, she managed to overcome the challenges and win convincingly. Aryna Sabalenka also progressed with a decisive win over Lucia Bronzetti. Both players navigated the extreme weather conditions that affected many matches, including those of Alexander Zverev and other competitors who faced heat-related issues.
