Dimitrij Ovtcharov has returned to winning form in the WTT Series, capturing the Men’s Singles title with a commanding 4-1 victory over Ricardo Walther at the WTT Contender Lagos 2024 (11-7, 11-7, 7-11, 12-10, 11-6). This win marks the end of a three-year wait for Ovtcharov, who last lifted a WTT Series singles trophy at the inaugural WTT Contender Doha in March 2021.
Prior to this triumph, Ovtcharov's only singles success in the interim came at the WTT Feeder Düsseldorf III 2022. Throughout the Lagos event, he demonstrated remarkable form, losing just one game en route to the final. In the decisive match, he showcased his skill and experience to overcome Walther, earning the top honors in the Nigerian city.
This victory not only ends Ovtcharov's title drought but also marks an improvement from his runner-up finish at last year's WTT Contender event in Lagos. His performance this year underscores his resilience and ability to compete at the highest level.
Expressing his excitement, Ovtcharov shared, "I'm thrilled and had a good feeling coming back to Lagos because of the incredible support I received last year. Despite being unwell before the match, the fans' support was exceptional and kept me going. Winning in Lagos is special, and it feels like a home away from home, alongside Germany and Russia where I also feel welcomed. This is a significant moment for me."
