The Men's Singles qualifying at China Smash 2024 saw a major upset as top seed Eduard Ionescu was ousted by Deni Kozul in a thrilling five-game match. Kozul mounted an impressive comeback after losing the first two games, saving five match points to win 7-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-3, 15-13. Despite Ionescu’s early dominance and smooth forehand winners, Kozul's resilience and sharp play under pressure secured his spot in round 2.
Ionescu appeared in control, taking the first two games and nearly closing out the third with a 10-8 lead. However, Kozul held his nerve, winning four consecutive points to stay in the match. In the fourth game, Kozul's strong receiving and quick responses overwhelmed Ionescu, bringing the match to a decisive final game. Kozul quickly built a commanding lead, but Ionescu fought back with six straight points, only to fall short in the end, as Kozul's wide forehand shots sealed the victory.
Kozul now advances to face Gustavo Gomez in the second round, continuing his quest for a WTT Grand Smash main draw debut. Meanwhile, the Women's Singles qualifying also saw intense action, highlighted by a dramatic match between two sisters.
