Defending Champion Samsonova dominates in Toray Pan Pacific Open opener

Defending champion Liudmila Samsonova made a strong start at the Toray Pan Pacific Open, defeating Tatjana Maria 6-0, 6-2 in just 61 minutes. This victory marked her sixth consecutive win in Tokyo, where she won her fourth career title last year.

Samsonova's dominance continued as she extended her head-to-head record against Maria to 2-0, with a previous victory in 2019.
 
In the first set, Samsonova displayed near-flawless play, dropping just three points on her serve and 11 points in total. Although Maria managed to get on the board early in the second set, she missed two break point opportunities that could have given her a 2-0 lead.

Samsonova quickly regained control and finished the match with 25 winners, including seven aces, and 15 unforced errors.
 
Samsonova's next opponent in the second round will be determined between Ekaterina Alexandrova and wild card Anna Kalinskaya. Meanwhile, Anhelina Kalinina, who reached the final in Rome, ended 19-year-old Ashlyn Krueger's five-match winning streak with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Krueger had recently claimed her first WTA Tour title in Osaka but couldn't maintain her momentum against Kalinina. In the next round, Kalinina will face No.5 seed Caroline Garcia, who received a bye after reaching the Guadalajara semifinals last week.
