De Minaur sets sights on greater success in 2025

Posted : 23 December 2024

Alex De Minaur is coming off a stellar season that marked significant progress in his career, highlighted by reaching a personal best world ranking of No. 6. The 25-year-old Australian now has his sights set on making even greater strides in 2025, fueled by his achievements and the lessons learned from the past year.

Last season, De Minaur claimed two ATP titles and reached the quarterfinals in three of the four Grand Slam tournaments, cementing his position among the sport's elite. Additionally, he earned a spot in the prestigious ATP Finals, showcasing his consistency and resilience throughout the year.

His success in 2024 was even more impressive given the challenges he faced, including a hip injury that affected his performance mid-season. Now fully recovered, De Minaur is eager to kickstart his 2025 campaign at the United Cup, a mixed-team tournament that serves as a warm-up for the Australian Open beginning on January 12.

Reflecting on his year, De Minaur described 2024 as a "breakthrough" season but emphasized his hunger for further improvement. “I played some incredible tennis, reached a career-high No. 6, and qualified for the end-of-year finals,” he said. “But I still believe there’s more I can achieve. That’s what drives me to work so hard—never being satisfied.”

De Minaur will begin his season on Saturday at the Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney, facing world No. 39 Tomas Etcheverry. Representing Australia under the captaincy of Lleyton Hewitt, De Minaur is set to compete in a group that also includes Britain, setting the stage for a possible mixed-doubles match against his girlfriend, Katie Boulter.

The United Cup, which features 18 teams, combines men’s and women’s singles matches with a mixed-doubles component. While the prospect of facing her partner in competition is unusual, Boulter acknowledged the unique dynamic. “It’s tough playing against Alex, both professionally and personally,” she said. “But it also adds a bit of fun and bragging rights to the mix.”

The tournament kicks off on Friday, with Kazakhstan taking on Spain and China facing Brazil in Perth. As De Minaur prepares for the new season, he remains focused on building momentum and capitalizing on his recent success, aiming to make 2025 another unforgettable chapter in his career.
