DC Open: Jennifer Brady returns to WTA Tour, wins against Anhelina Kalinina

Jennifer Brady, the former Australian Open finalist, made a triumphant return to the WTA Tour after a two-year absence due to knee and foot injuries. During her recovery period, her ranking plummeted from world number 16 to 1,056th. However, her comeback in Washington was nothing short of impressive as she secured a straight-set victory against Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine, who is ranked 28th in the world.
 
Brady's emphatic performance demonstrated her determination and readiness to compete with the best again. In her post-match interview, she expressed her happiness with the way she handled her emotions and executed her game plan, resulting in a well-deserved win. Tennis holds a significant place in her life, and she is grateful to be back on the court doing what she loves.
 
The American player faced a challenging time in 2021 when she had to retire from a match due to a foot injury. However, her successes in previous years, including reaching the semi-finals of the US Open in 2020 and the final of the Australian Open in 2021, served as motivation for her return.
 
Before making her WTA Tour comeback, Brady prepared by participating in an ITF World Tennis Tour event in Canada. On her return to the Tour, she demonstrated her prowess, taking just one hour and eight minutes to defeat Kalinina with six breaks of serve and dominating the last 11 games.
 
This victory against Kalinina marked Brady's best win by ranking since her run to the Grand Slam final in Australia. Looking ahead, she will face Madison Keys, her doubles partner and former US Open finalist, in the next round. Keys secured her place in the second round by defeating Zheng Qinwen of China in a convincing manner.
 
Both Brady and Keys are eager to continue their winning streaks and showcase their best tennis as they progress in the DC Open. With Brady's return to the Tour and Keys' impressive form, their upcoming match promises to be an exciting encounter.
