Russian fifth seed Daniil Medvedev advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Sunday after Bulgarian 10th seed Grigor Dimitrov retired from their fourth-round match due to injury. With Medvedev leading 5-3 in the first set on Court One, Dimitrov, visibly hampered by a knee injury sustained from a slip when he was up 3-0, made the decision to withdraw as he struggled with mobility.
Dimitrov initially took a medical timeout in an attempt to continue playing but ultimately could not proceed. This development grants Medvedev a straightforward path to the next round, where he will face world No. 1 Jannik Sinner for a chance to reach the semifinals.
Last year, Medvedev reached the Wimbledon semifinals, marking his deepest run at the prestigious tournament, where he fell to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. The upcoming quarterfinal match against Sinner also offers Medvedev an opportunity to seek redemption following his loss to the Italian in the Australian Open final earlier this year.
