Dan Evans of Britain secured a spot in the Shanghai Masters' last 32 and set up a meeting with the top seed and world number two, Carlos Alcaraz. This advancement came about when Evans faced qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan, who retired from the match with Evans leading 6-2, 3-0.
The match had initially been postponed from Saturday due to heavy rain, but Evans made the most of the opportunity when play resumed.
Meanwhile, fellow Briton Cameron Norrie, seeded 15th, experienced a tough defeat in a third-set tie-break against American JJ Wolf. Norrie was leading 3-6, 7-5, 3-2 with a break when rain interrupted the game on Saturday. On Sunday, Norrie served for the match at 5-4 but was broken by the world number 51, leading to a tie-break that Wolf won 7-4, securing his place in the last 32.
The defending champion and US Open runner-up, Daniil Medvedev, also faced a surprising exit as he lost 7-6 (10-8), 6-2 to American Sebastian Korda. On a more successful note, world number nine Casper Ruud advanced with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 win over American Christopher Eubanks. However, the 13th seed, Frances Tiafoe, couldn't maintain his lead and fell 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 to Lorenzo Sonego. The Shanghai Masters continued to provide thrilling tennis encounters and unexpected outcomes.
