Corentin Moutet booed after racquet smash, retires match

Posted : 24 April 2025

The Madrid Open witnessed a tense moment during a first-round clash when French tennis player Corentin Moutet lost his cool following a point against compatriot Harold Mayot. Fans quickly voiced their disapproval as the match took a chaotic turn, with Moutet’s visible frustration culminating in an abrupt and unexpected retirement.

Moutet, who had dropped the first set 3-6 and was behind 2-3 in the second, reacted to losing a point by violently smashing his racquet on the court. Not stopping there, he snapped the racquet with his hands before heading back to his chair—only to then approach the umpire, shake hands, and retire from the match.

The crowd in Madrid responded with boos, clearly displeased with the sudden end to what had become an emotionally charged encounter. Spectators were left shocked by the Frenchman's decision to walk away mid-set in such dramatic fashion.

Later that day, Moutet took to social media to explain his actions, revealing that a persistent back issue had severely limited his performance. “I went for an MRI right after the match,” he wrote on X. “I didn’t expect the pain to be this bad. My back just didn’t let me do much.”

He added that his choice to play had been a risk, one he hoped would not worsen the injury, and wished Mayot the best for the rest of the tournament. Despite his apology and explanation, the frustration Moutet displayed during the match remained a talking point.

Before retiring, Moutet had also been seen exchanging words with fans and appeared agitated by the reaction from the stands. “If you're not happy, leave. There are other courts,” he reportedly shouted, angered by the crowd and possibly a few calls from the umpire.

His opponent, Harold Mayot, went on to record his first-ever win at a WTA 1000-level event. The 22-year-old now advances to face Sebastian Korda in the next round, as the tournament continues without one of its more volatile contenders.
