Coco Gauff wins first Grand Slam title with thrilling victory at US Open
Posted : 09 September 2023
In a thrilling match that electrified the home crowd in New York, 19-year-old Coco Gauff secured her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open. Gauff, ranked 6th in the world, displayed remarkable resilience as she battled past Aryna Sabalenka, the world's 2nd-ranked player, with a final score of 6-2, 3-6, 2-6.
This victory cements Gauff's status as one of the most promising talents in tennis and marks her as the 11th teenager, both male and female, to capture a Grand Slam title. Often likened to the "next Serena Williams" since her breakout performance at Wimbledon at just 15 years old, Gauff has faced ups and downs but showcased her potential to become the dominant player of the new generation.
Sabalenka, the pre-tournament favorite, had a remarkable 2023 season, reaching the semifinals of all four Grand Slam events, a feat not achieved since Serena Williams in 2016. However, her quest for a second career Grand Slam title was thwarted by Gauff. Despite the disappointment, Sabalenka's runner-up finish in the US Open propelled her to the world number one ranking, displacing Iga Swiatek.
The match itself saw Sabalenka seize an early advantage, breaking Gauff's serve and racing to a 0-2 lead. Gauff, fueled by the home crowd's support, fought back, breaking Sabalenka's serve and leveling the score at 2-2. However, Sabalenka broke Gauff once more and extended her lead to 2-5. In a surprising turn of events, Sabalenka claimed the first set 0-1 despite a slew of unforced errors and double faults.
The second set witnessed a more determined Gauff, who managed to hold her serve, take an early 0-1 lead, and equalize the match at 1-1 after a gritty performance. Gauff saved match points and secured a crucial break with the aid of Sabalenka's double fault, ultimately winning the set 3-6.
With momentum on her side, Gauff continued to apply pressure in the third set. She broke Sabalenka's serve in the opening game, maintained her composure, and secured another break to lead 0-3. Though Sabalenka made a late rally to reduce the deficit to 4-2, Gauff remained unfazed, clinching the set 2-6 and sealing her first Grand Slam triumph.
