Following her recent Citi Open victory, Coco Gauff continued her strong performance by defeating British No. 1 Katie Boulter in straight sets during her opening match at the Canadian Open in Montreal. Gauff, ranked No. 6 in the world, showcased her dominance over Boulter with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win in just over an hour.
In the next round, Gauff will face off against Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, who triumphed over former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki. Meanwhile, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek also secured a successful start by defeating Karolina Pliskova with a score of 7-6(6), 6-2. Swiatek is set to face Karolina Muchova in a rematch of the French Open final. Additionally, world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka is scheduled to play her first match since Wimbledon against Petra Martic later in the day.
During her title-winning run in Washington DC, Gauff did not drop a single set, and she continued her strong performance against Boulter. Gauff quickly gained momentum by winning eight of the first nine points, securing a 2-0 lead. Her aggressive playstyle and powerful shots allowed her to maintain control, breaking Boulter's serve and winning the first set 6-2.
Boulter demonstrated some resistance at the beginning of the second set, holding her serve and challenging Gauff in a lengthy opening game. However, Gauff's determination prevailed, and she eventually secured a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Boulter.
Swiatek faced a more challenging match against Pliskova, especially during a competitive first set that lasted 62 minutes. Despite breaking Pliskova's serve twice, Swiatek encountered immediate breaks in return. Nevertheless, Swiatek clinched the first set in a tie-breaker. The second set proved more one-sided, as Swiatek comfortably secured a 3-0 lead and ultimately secured the victory.
Elena Rybakina faced a tough challenge from Jennifer Brady, eventually triumphing with a score of 6-7(3), 7-6(5), 6-3. Rybakina, ranked No. 4 in the world, narrowly escaped defeat in the second-set tie-breaker against former US Open runner-up Brady. Despite the close call, Rybakina seized the opportunity to win the set and the match.
In another match, Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova brought an end to Caroline Wozniacki's comeback week with a 6-2, 7-5 victory. Wozniacki, making her return to competitive tennis after three-and-a-half years away, showcased resilience by recovering from a double break in the second set. However, Vondrousova's solid performance prevented Wozniacki from forcing a decider.
Other notable results include fourth seed Jessica Pegula defeating Yulia Putintseva 6-4, 6-4, and Belinda Bencic overcoming Alycia Parks 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. Additionally, Sloane Stephens and Jasmine Paolini advanced without playing due to the withdrawal of their respective opponents, Victoria Azarenka and Madison Keys, due to injuries.
