Coco Gauff Qualifies for WTA Finals in Riyadh

Posted : 15 October 2024

At just 20 years old, Coco Gauff exemplifies the modern athlete shaped by the digital age. Recently, before her qualification was made official, she discovered that she had secured a spot at the PIF WTA Finals in Riyadh. After her semifinal loss to Aryna Sabalenka in Wuhan, Gauff humorously revealed to reporters, “If you look it up online, there’s a checkmark by my name. They told me not to say anything. Sorry.” Her light-heartedness reflects the excitement surrounding her achievement, which will see her join fellow players Elena Rybakina, Jasmine Paolini, and Jessica Pegula at the prestigious event scheduled for November 2-9.

Gauff and Pegula are making their third consecutive appearance in singles at the WTA Finals. Despite facing challenges, including losing all their doubles matches during the group play in Cancun, both players reached the semifinals in singles, with Pegula ultimately falling to Swiatek in the final. Gauff expressed enthusiasm about competing in singles this time, stating, “It’s my first time not playing doubles, so that’s going to be a different experience. I’m looking at dresses. They have a lot of things planned for us. I’m super excited.”

The race for the year-end No.1 ranking remains tight, with Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka qualifying for the championships for the fourth consecutive year. Swiatek has held the top ranking since April 2022, maintaining it for 75 weeks, while Sabalenka briefly held the position after last year’s US Open. As the season approaches its conclusion, Swiatek leads the PIF WTA Rankings with 9,785 points, closely followed by Sabalenka, who is only 69 points behind.

In the doubles category, only two spots remain for the WTA Finals, with Caroline Dolehide and Desirae Krawczyk already qualified despite losing their first match in Wuhan. They are among the five teams that have secured their places, while Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez, along with Chan Hao-Ching and Veronika Kudermetova, are currently in strong positions to qualify. As the competition heats up in the final weeks of the season, players are eager to secure their spots and make a mark at the Finals in Riyadh.
