Coco Gauff beats Jodie Burrage in Eastbourne International quarter-finals

Posted : 28 June 2023
Coco Gauff, ranked seventh in the world, dominated Britain's Jodie Burrage to secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the Eastbourne International. The American powerhouse defeated Burrage 6-1, 6-1 in just one hour.

Gauff's superior skills overwhelmed her opponent, who lost ten consecutive games against the formidable player. Gauff will now face her doubles partner Jessica Pegula in the next round.

In another match, Britain's Harriet Dart engaged in a closely contested battle against Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko but ultimately fell short, losing 6-3, 6-4. Dart, who has shown promise on grass courts, fought hard against the Birmingham Classic champion, but Ostapenko proved to be the better player in crucial moments.

Ostapenko's victory sets up a quarter-final clash against either Ons Jabeur or Camila Giorgi.

In the men's event, Britain's Liam Broady faced a defeat at the hands of Sweden's Mikel Ymer, with a final score of 6-2, 6-4. Broady, along with Burrage and Dart, has been granted a wildcard entry for the upcoming Wimbledon tournament, which commences on July 3.

Burrage had displayed an impressive performance earlier in the grass-court season, reaching the final of the Nottingham Open and defeating notable players such as Magda Linette and Alize Cornet. However, her encounter with Gauff posed a significant challenge.

The American quickly gained momentum, winning five consecutive games to claim the first set. Despite Burrage's efforts, Gauff secured an early break in the second set and continued her dominance by winning five more games.

Burrage managed to win a game to make it 5-1, but ultimately succumbed to Gauff's superiority when she hit a forehand long on match point.

Gauff praised Burrage's recent successes on grass and expressed hope for her performance at Wimbledon. She also mentioned her fondness for the peaceful atmosphere of Eastbourne, likening it to her hometown.

Gauff's next opponent will be world number three, Jessica Pegula, who defeated Camila Osorio 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 in her match.
