Posted : 20 June 2023
Peniston started his match with a strong hold to love on his serve, setting the tone for his confident performance. The turning point came in the third game of the first set when he converted a break point to take the lead against his French opponent.
After winning the first set, Peniston quickly secured an early break in the second set and went on to win the match in an hour and 25 minutes.
In another British victory, Cam Norrie returned to grass court with a win over Miomir Kecmanovic from Serbia. The first set was closely contested, with both players losing their serves early on. Norrie managed to find a breakthrough late in the set and claimed it. He continued his dominance in the second set and sealed the match with a tie-break victory.
Ben Shelton had a memorable debut on grass court, grinding out a hard-fought 7-6(4), 7-6(2) win against fellow British player J.J. Wolf. Francisco Cerundulo emerged victorious in a three-set match against Tommy Paul, winning 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4.
However, it was a disappointing outcome for British No.2 Dan Evans, who lost to Sebastian Korda in a 6-4, 7-5 defeat. Korda, in his first appearance at the cinch Championships, showcased strong serving throughout the match.
In the final match on the center court, Jan Choinski exited the tournament after a 6-2, 6-2 loss to sixth seed Lorenzo Musetti.
