Chinese tennis rising star Zheng Qinwen secured her first tour-level victory at home by defeating Kateryna Volodko in the first round of the Bank of Communications Zhengzhou Open. Zheng, 21, who recently won a gold medal at the Asian Games, displayed dominant form, winning 6-4, 6-3 in just 1 hour and 24 minutes.
Zheng's powerful serve and forehand were instrumental in her victory, as she recorded 11 aces and yielded only one point on her first serve. She also hit 23 winners, including impressive down-the-line shots. Her opponent, former World No. 29 Volodko, struggled to keep up with Zheng's pace and made 23 unforced errors, including six double faults.
In the next round, Zheng will face the No. 3 seed, Maria Sakkari, whom she has not beaten in previous encounters but remains determined to give her best performance.
In other matches, Lucia Bronzetti defeated Guo Hanyu 7-5, 6-1, setting up a second-round clash with No. 4 seed Ons Jabeur. Jasmine Paolini advanced by defeating Moyuka Uchijima 6-2, 6-3 and will face No. 6 seed Caroline Garcia next.
No. 10 seed Donna Vekic and Lesia Tsurenko both won with identical 6-4, 6-2 scorelines against Nao Hibino and Diana Shnaider, respectively, setting up a second-round meeting between them.
