China Claims Gold in Mixed Doubles Table Tennis, North Korea Takes Silver

On Tuesday in Paris, North Korea claimed their first Olympic medal in eight years, securing silver in mixed doubles table tennis after losing to China. The Chinese team, comprising Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha, defeated North Korea's Ri Jong Sik and Kim Kum Yong with a score of 11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 11-5, 7-11, 11-8. This victory marked China’s return to dominance in table tennis, an arena where they have historically excelled, having won 32 of the 37 gold medals available since the sport was introduced to the Olympics.

 

China's table tennis prowess had been temporarily disrupted in the Tokyo 2021 Olympics when the mixed doubles event was first introduced, and they failed to secure the title. However, Wang and Sun's win in Paris has reinstated their status as the world’s top table tennis pair. The victory is part of China’s broader ambition to sweep all table tennis events in the current Games.

 

North Korea’s team had missed the Tokyo Olympics due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, making this return significant. Alongside North Korea, the South Korean duo Lim Jong-hoon and Shin Yu-bin secured bronze, rounding out the podium in a highly competitive event. The Chinese pair received substantial support from the energetic crowd at the South Paris Arena, who were clad in red and vocal throughout the match.

 

Wang and Sun, who have maintained an undefeated streak outside China for four years, demonstrated early control by winning the first game. Despite a strong comeback from North Korea, which tied the match at one point, the Chinese duo ultimately clinched the gold after a tense finish. Japan had won the inaugural mixed doubles title in Tokyo by defeating China, but the Chinese team’s triumph in Paris has restored their dominance in the sport.
