Casper Ruud Calls for Fairer Revenue Share in Grand Slams

Posted : 04 April 2025

Casper Ruud has raised concerns about the distribution of revenue in tennis, arguing that players receive an unfair share of the vast sums generated by Grand Slam tournaments. The former world No. 2 believes prize money accounts for only about 15% of total revenue from the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

Speaking at an Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) event in Nîmes, France, Ruud compared the situation to major American sports leagues like the NFL, MLB, and NBA, where athletes receive close to 50% of generated revenue. He emphasized that the current model does not provide players with a fair cut.

His remarks follow revelations that several top-20 players have sent a letter to Grand Slam organizers requesting a more equitable distribution of earnings. The French Tennis Federation (FFT) confirmed receiving the letter and stated that they had responded by inviting players to a direct discussion.

The governing body proposed meetings at upcoming tournaments, including the Madrid Open and Roland Garros, or at another mutually agreeable time. The push for increased transparency and fairer revenue-sharing has gained momentum as more players advocate for a larger stake in the sport’s financial success.

When asked whether he had personally signed the letter, Ruud was cautious in his response, saying he could not disclose details but acknowledged the possibility. He stressed that many people remain unaware of how Grand Slam revenues are allocated, highlighting the need for greater clarity on the issue.

At 26 years old, the Norwegian star has been vocal about financial inequalities in the sport, reflecting a growing movement among top players to challenge the status quo and seek a fairer distribution of the sport’s wealth.
