Caroline Garcia, ranked 23rd in the world, advanced to the round of 16 in the 2024 Miami Open with a straight-set victory over former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka, who was making a comeback after more than a year away from the sport. Garcia, despite recent form struggles, clinched the win in Florida, setting up a match against local favorite Coco Gauff in the upcoming round scheduled for Monday. She defeated Naomi Osaka 7-6(4) 7-5 in the third round of the tournament.
Osaka had been in good form, winning all four sets played in Miami, including victories over Elisabetta Cocciaretto and No. 15 seed Elina Svitolina in straight sets. The opening set of Sunday’s match on the Grandstand court between the 26-year-old Osaka and Garcia was tightly contested, leading to a tie-breaker to determine the set winner. Despite both players struggling to hold serve during the tie-break, Garcia managed to secure it 7-4, taking the early advantage.
In the second set, Osaka broke Garcia to lead 4-2, but her advantage was short-lived as the French player quickly broke back to level the set. Garcia eventually secured the win, breaking Osaka's serve, in a match marked by powerful serves, with Osaka hitting 16 aces and Garcia producing 12 of her own. This victory marked an improvement in Garcia's recent form, having lost five of her last six matches, while Osaka is still finding her rhythm after returning to the sport following a 15-month break due to pregnancy.
After her defeat, Osaka expressed her dissatisfaction with her performance, stating, “I truthfully really hated my last performance there... I wasn’t playing like myself, and I wasn’t dictating the point." She emphasized the importance of dictating points and having a strong serve, areas where she felt she fell short in the match. Despite the loss, Osaka aimed for progression and a return to her usual style of play in future matches.
Garcia's next opponent is Coco Gauff, who swiftly defeated Oceane Dodin 6-4 6-0 in her previous match. Gauff, despite trailing 2-4 in the first set, staged an impressive comeback, winning ten consecutive games to secure her spot in the next round.
