Carlos Alcaraz wins Hopman Cup for first time since Wimbledon

Carlos Alcaraz secured a victory at the Hopman Cup in France, marking his first win since his Wimbledon triumph. The world number one's hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 win against David Goffin helped Spain level their tie with Belgium at 1-1, following team-mate Rebeka Masarova's loss to Elise Mertens.
Alcaraz, who recently defeated 23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic to claim the Wimbledon title, showed his resilience on his debut in the event. The tournament, an international mixed-teams indoor tennis event, made its return this week after a four-year absence.
Despite facing challenges on the clay court, the 20-year-old responded strongly to Goffin's initial lead, eventually clinching victory after coming from 0-4 down in the super tie-break.
In the mixed doubles, Alcaraz and Masarova couldn't secure a win against Goffin and Mertens, resulting in a 2-1 victory for Belgium in the overall tie.
Spain's next challenge will be against Croatia, who secured a 2-1 victory against Belgium. The winners of the three-team group will advance to the final to face Switzerland on Sunday.
The Hopman Cup, named after Australian great Harry Hopman, returned to the tennis calendar after being replaced by the ATP Cup men's team event for a short period. The previous edition in 2019 saw Roger Federer leading Switzerland to victory against Germany.
